After being revealed in the recent Japanese Nintendo Direct, legendary developer Square Enix has announced the launch of their new horror adventure game Paranormasight: The Seven Mysteries of Honjo onto mobile as well as Steam! This new venture from the historical developer sees you embark into late Showa-era Japan as you get caught up in a spooky mystery full of history and Japanese folklore.
Horror is not often a genre we see approached on mobile, which is rather unfortunate given how potentially well it could fit into a bite-sized pocket experience. Now, we not only have a new entry into the field, but also one from an acclaimed triple-A developer, and it shows just by looking at the game, let alone playing it.
Paranormasight has a striking and unique art style, landing somewhere between anime and comic book, with gorgeously animated and hand-drawn scenes and characters. The soundtrack is gorgeous and tense, with grating horror strings and a creepy ambience as the backdrop to your ghost-filled adventure.
Gameplay-wise, it works mostly like a visual novel. There are scenes between each character in between their expeditions to different parts of the lands, and this carries most of the entire game as the characters themselves are really what you’re here for. There are small interactive segments of puzzles and story sections that you actually control, but for the most part, this is a classic adventure game at its core.
As for the story, I hesitate to mention much of it here due to not wanting to spoil anything, but it deals with some heavy themes like grief, loss, and death. It’s not for the faint of heart, but one for horror fans to check out for sure!
If you’d like to do so, you can currently purchase it for $14.99 at either of the links below!
