Square Enix’s plans on entering the blockchain space are no secret and the company is seemingly ramping up their efforts.

The company even famously sold off some of their biggest IPs such as Tomb Raider, Lagacy of Kain, Deus Exand others when they sold off their western development studios to Embracer Group, likely in a bid to pursue other projects.

While blockchain isn’t the rage it once was even a year ago, Square Enix remains committed to their goals as recently as their new year celebration. They’ve even announced a game, Symbiogenesiswhich will be their first major NFT project.

The company has also continued to double down on their plans, as revealed in their most recent financial results briefing meant to cover Q1-Q3 for the fiscal year ending on March 31, 2023. One of the questions was about their release schedule and growth for their fiscal year 2024.

“Major title launches will not be concentrated solely in FY2024/3. We have organized our pipeline so that we will have a good spread of new releases in FY2025/3 and beyond as well,” Square Enix president Yosuke Matsuda said. “We also hope that you will look forward to the blockchain games we plan to launch in FY2024/3 and thereafter”.

Note that when they say fiscal year 2024, it is in reference to the fiscal date, which ends March 31, 2024. Officially it begins April 1st, 2023. Which means Square Enix’s first blockchain games should be expected to launch later this year.

Chances are, it’s in reference to their previously announced Symbiogenesis. Though if this is the case, then this could be a quiet admission of a delay, as the project was expected to come out this Spring, but they are talking about Q3 (Autumn) in this case.

At the same time, this could also be about more unannounced projects that are in the works using blockchain technology. Only time will tell what Matsuda meant in this regard.
