Switch Online June 2023 Genesis Lineup Includes Ghouls 'n Ghosts And More

Nintendo has announced four new Genesis games for the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack service. You’re getting two classic sidescrolling platformers and two Zelda-inspired action RPGs, and unlike some previous Switch Online hauls, there’s no filler here; all four of these are arguably well worth checking out.

Throughout June, Nintendo has been adding games to the Switch Online service’s retro offerings, including a beloved farming sim and a classic Game Boy Advance strategy RPG. Now, it’s the Genesis’ turn to get some love, and if you’ve got the Expansion Pack addon for Switch Online, you’re in for some treats.

First up, it’s the very Zelda-esque top-down action RPG Crusader of Centy. Getting to enjoy this one without spending a huge amount of money is exciting in and of itself; physical copies of the 1995 RPG have become collector’s items, and although this Switch Online re-release doesn’t come with the (also incredibly rare) hint book, there’s always the internet, eh?

The second Genesis game being added to Switch Online needs no introduction, but I’ll give it one anyway. Ghouls ‘n Ghosts is part of the long-running Ghosts ‘n Goblins series, so as you might expect, it’s a hard-as-nails sidescrolling platformer that should give you plenty of sleepless nights, especially if you aren’t using save states.

Third on the list is Landstalker, an isometric action-adventure game full of puzzles to solve and enemies to dispatch. I played the Sega Saturn spiritual successor Dark Savior, so I’m pretty excited to check this one out and see where my childhood came from. Hopefully, it’s not quite as obscure as Dark Savior could be.

Last but not least, you’re getting the excellent ninja action sidescroller The Revenge of Shinobi. If you like Castlevania and Ninja Gaiden, you’ll likely enjoy this, although fair warning: it can get pretty difficult. All four of these games are available to check out on Nintendo Switch Online right now (assuming you’ve got the Expansion Pack addon, of course).
