Xbox has unveiled a new controller for Earth Day, and as you’d imagine, it’s got a more eco-conscious slant than the company’s usual peripherals. It’s partially made from reclaimed and recycled materials, including water jugs, CDs, and other Xbox controllers, and it comes complete with a rechargeable battery pack.
In its official announcement for the Remix Special Edition controller, Xbox says that Earth Day creates a “special opportunity to reflect on how we can improve our impact on the planet”. To that end, the Remix Special Edition controller is partially constructed from “regrind and reclaimed materials”; one third of the controller is made in this way.
According to Xbox, the controller is built from “post-consumer recycled resins”, which are materials reclaimed from objects like plastic water jugs, CDs, and automotive headlight covers. The controller also incorporates “regrind”, which refers to mechanically-recycled last-gen controller parts that have been reforged into raw materials for new peripherals.
As you’d imagine, the color scheme for the controller is rather “earthy”, with dark and light greens contrasting against soft blues and wood grain effects. It’s a very distinctive look, and while I’m sure it won’t be for everyone, the attempt to create something different is laudable at least.
The Remix Special Edition also comes with a rechargeable battery pack, which you’ll recognize as a win if you’ve bought a new Xbox controller recently. Otherwise, it’s a pretty standard Xbox controller that does everything you’d expect an official peripheral to do, although this one’s got added recycled materials.
You’ll be able to pick up this new, more eco-friendly controller on April 18th. It’ll cost you $84.99, so it’s a little steeper than a normal controller, but you are getting a recharge pack as well. You can pre-order the controller right now via the official Xbox website if you want to.
